The National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, has been named the new Chairperson of the JointAction Committee (JAC) for both SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

The statement released by SSANU’s National Public Relations Officer (NPRO), Comrade Jafar Bage, indicated that this announcement was delivered by NASU’s President, Dr. Mokolo Hassan, at a Joint Action Committee (JAC) gathering held in Abuja.

Dr. Hassan termed the selection of the SSANU President as "well past due" and showed faith in the new chairperson’s capability to steer the committee successfully.

Although specific terms of his position were not revealed, he stressed the significance of solidarity between the two unions when tackling shared issues.

The attendees at the gathering vowed their complete backing and collaboration with the newly appointed JAC chairman, emphasizing their dedication to working together to enhance the well-being of employees at the institution.

The Combined Action Group of SSANU and NASU has played a crucial role in discussions with the national administration regarding concerns impacting non-academic employees at Nigerian tertiary institutions, such as salaries, work environments, and retirement benefits.

The main focus of the meeting was the plan for distributing the N50 billion allocated for allowances, which were recently approved by the Ministry of Education for sharing with university-based unions. Additionally, discussions included the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement along with the presentation of the SSANU annual calendar.

The leadership of JAC rotates between SSANU and NASU, with Comrade Samson Ugwoke having transferred responsibilities to NASU when his term ended approximately five years ago.
