Storm Claims Three Lives, Injures Four in Imo

Severe thunderstorms in Obidi, Agwa, within the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, struck on Tuesday evening, resulting in at least three fatalities and leaving four individuals wounded.

The whole community was gripped by tension following the event, with many locals finding the thunderstorm peculiar since it did not come with significant rainfall.

Mr. Nze Ike, an elderly member of the community who confirmed the occurrence, stated that four individuals are presently fighting for their lives at the hospital as a result of the damage caused by the thunderstorm.

As he said, the thunderstorm came with some light rain.

Nze stated, "There wasn't much rainfall in the area on Tuesday, but the thunderstorm had a devastating effect, resulting in three fatalities. All those affected passed away immediately. Currently, as we converse, four individuals remain hospitalized."

The lightning hit a large tree often used for shelter, impacting nearly everyone beneath it.

“Allegations arose that our community had murdered the traditional ruler sometime ago. People are fearful as they believe this might indicate an act of desecration since such incidents were unprecedented in our history.”

Nze mentioned that certain parents have asked their offspring to delay returning home until the adverse conditions subside.

Mr. Collins Ughalla, a community leader from Agwa, referred to that incident as a major disaster.

"We're still grieving. This happened last in the 1980s. May the Lord grant them peace," Ughalla stated.

Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful as his phone number was unreachable.
