Fakhrul Unhappy with IG's Decision to Open Humanitarian Corridor for Rakhine

Thakurgaon, April 29 -- Criticising the government's unilateral decision to allow a humanitarian corridor for the displaced Rohingyas from Arakan without consulting all political parties, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suggested that such decisions be taken collectively.

At a campaign event held beside a road in Khagrabari Sheikh Bazar, which falls within the Jagannathpur union of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila on Monday night, Fakhrul highlighted the importance of adopting an all-encompassing strategy for both humanitarian and political choices.

Regarding the political reforms, Fakhrul expressed his confusion: “I’m unsure what constitutes ‘reform.’ I grasp concepts like democracy and citizens’ rights. The task of organizing elections was assigned to Professor Yunus, rather than enacting political changes. While he is indeed wise and holds a Nobel Prize, politics isn’t his forte.”

The head of the BNP charged the Awami League with transforming the nation into a living nightmare during their last 15 years in power, pointing to claims of forced vanishings, graft, and oppression.

"Individuals have spilled blood to depose Hasina," he stated, referencing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He further claimed that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was subjected to torture while in custody on trumped-up charges and was confined to solitary cells as though she were "a rat trapped in a cage."

Fakhrul echoed Khaleda Zia's sentiment after describing it as a people's revolution: "Let us put aside all grievances and collectively construct a splendid Bangladesh."

He spoke about communal harmony, saying, "We refer to our Hindu brethren as exactly what they are—brethren. Ex-MP Ramesh Chandra Sen attempted to foster discord. Our aim is to protect Hindu residents. Every individual should have the freedom to follow their faith without hindrance."

Fakhrul ended his speech by urging solidarity and harmonious living amongst all groups, stating, "We have struggled for democracy. Although the nation is independent, citizens still do not possess their full rights. It is crucial that we cast our votes now to establish a government that genuinely represents the people."

Fakhrul anticipates that the election uncertainties will be addressed through discussions and solidarity.

Various officials from the BNP party attended the gathering, which included District BNP General Secretary Mirza Faisal Amin, Joint General Secretary Paigam Ali, Sadar Upazila President Abdul Hamid, General Secretary Mahbub Hossain Tuhin, and Women's Wing President Foratun Nahar Paris, along with several additional members.
