With the box office down, James Gunn predicts summer of 'Superman' to the rescue
Dhaka, April 2 -- The 2025 box office is facing a shortfall. Could James Gunn’s “summer of Superman” rescue it?
On Tuesday, Warner Bros. presented an array of forthcoming movies with a mix of well-known actors, yet the evening truly belonged to Clark Kent.
I genuinely believe in this film. It highlights what seems to be a deficiency in human compassion, or perhaps a decline in such compassion," Gunn stated. "The movie aims to promote kindness and human affection.
During the yearly CinemaCon event and exhibition in Las Vegas, Gunn—the filmmaker behind the inaugural movie in the revamped DC Universe—unveiled the cast members as well. The actors expressed their enthusiasm about participating in the production of the film.
I feel immensely honored to portray a character who is deeply ingrained in popular culture, to such an extent that almost everybody recognizes the Superman emblem, understanding its significance whether they have watched the movies or read the comics," stated David Corenswet. He expressed his hope to "shed light on some fresh aspects of the character or simply introduce this cherished figure to a broader audience.
Corenswet was accompanied on stage by Rachel Brosnahan, portraying Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult, taking on the role of Lex Luthor.
Brosnahan mentioned, "For James, every set becomes a family where everyone involved genuinely wants to be there and enjoys creating these films. It’s truly delightful coming to work each day. Many of you might have heard this sentiment echoed elsewhere; however, it's not universally experienced.”
The casting for The Beatles biopic has been announced: Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn, and Harris Dickinson will be starring in it.
In 2023, Gunn was named as the director for the film soon after he and Peter Safran took on their roles as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios.
We resonate with your enthusiasm for this artistic medium," Safran addressed the gathering of theater proprietors. "This project serves as the cornerstone of our expansive DC Studios initiative and was the catalyst for James to travel extensively worldwide, thereby stretching cinematic techniques to new boundaries, enticing audiences back to your cinema halls.
The movie is set for theatrical release in July, joining a lineup of summer blockbusters featuring superheroes such as "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" and "Thunderbolts."
Besides "Superman," Warner Bros. highlighted several upcoming April releases from the main stage at the convention, such as Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" and "A Minecraft Movie." They also previewed their plans for titles scheduled for release in 2025.
To cater to movie enthusiasts, the studio began its presentation by introducing the cast members from Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming film "One Battle After Another," featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Regina Hall. This cinematic work is scheduled for theatrical release in September.
“I’ve been eager to collaborate with Paul for nearly two decades. He’s among the most distinctive artists of our era,” DiCaprio stated. “This film delves deeply into political and cultural currents simmering under our collective consciousness. Yet simultaneously, it boasts grand-scale storytelling and immense breadth.”
Director Joseph Kosinski along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer provided the audience with an extended preview of "F1," Brad Pitt’s upcoming Formula One racing film set for release in June.

Beyond showcasing film offerings from major Hollywood studios and celebrities who think these will attract viewers back to movie theatres, this yearly event is also an opportunity for discussions about pressing issues within the sector. Topics include determining optimal durations for screenings at cinema houses as well as exploring the degree of collaboration between studio giants and online streaming platforms in content creation.
