UK Travelers: Discover the Top European Getaway with £2 Beers and £38 Flights!

The top budget-friendly vacation spots for British travelers this year have been announced, with beers available for as low as £2 and flight tickets starting from only £36.

The Post Office Holiday Money Report examined 47 global destinations, assessing the cost of eight common vacation purchases like coffee, beer, sunscreen, and restaurant meals, to forecast the most economical getaways.

For nine consecutive years, the Algarve has maintained its position at the pinnacle of being the most cost-effective vacation spot for British tourists, largely due to its affordable dining options and beverages.

Visitors exploring Portugal’s busy south coast may find themselves paying as low as £40.33 for a three-course dinner for two including wine.

In the Algarve, coffee typically costs around £1, a beer goes for about £2.12, and a glass of wine is approximately £2.80.

Flights from London Flights to Faro, which is the closest airport to the Algarve, are available from just £36 in June, making it a budget-friendly option for a family vacation.

Laura Plunkett, an expert from Post Office Travel Money, commented: "It's noteworthy to observe the Algarve reclaiming its position at the summit of the gauge chart, which can be attributed primarily to the region’s consistent affordability when it comes to food and beverages."

Although the Algarve has been included in the most affordable top 10 list since 2010, it has found it difficult to compete with cheaper far-flung locations regarding pricing in recent years.

'Currently, prices have increased among its nearest rivals, yet they stayed low in Portugal.'

Among the top ten affordable European getaways are Prague, Spain’s Costa del Sol, and Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach.

Visitors can anticipate spending approximately £75.92 during their vacation in Prague, about £76.51 in Spain’s Costa del Sol, and as little as £71.46 when lodging at Sunny Beach on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastline.

On Spain’s Costa del Sol and Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach, visitors can typically have a cup of coffee for under £2, wine for less than £3, and a beer for around £2.50 on average.

Although visitors may find themselves paying slightly higher prices in Prague, where an average cup of coffee costs around £2.13 and a three-course dinner for two including wine comes to about £55.69, airfares remain quite affordable.

Return trips from the UK to Prague this summer start at only £27.

The number two spot for the best value destination goes to Cape Town, South Africa, where you can get a beer or a glass of wine for £2.07 and enjoy a cup of coffee for only £1.44.

However, it is located farther away and costs more for British people to reach, with one-way flights from London beginning at £297 and return tickets priced at £394.

Rounding out the top three destinations is Tokyo, Japan.

Visitors to the Land of the Rising Sun can enjoy their trip spending only £63.34, where a cup of coffee costs around £2.44 and a three-course dinner for two people accompanied by wine totals £44.58.

However, once more, trips to Japan in 2025 will be pricier for tourists due to flight costs. One-way direct flights from London to Tokyo currently start at £270, whereas return tickets go as high as £400.

A top choice for British travelers from America has been ranked as the priciest vacation destination this year.

Londoners heading to New York, which receives more than one million British visitors annually, will find it to be the priciest destination according to the report, with an estimated expense of £167.85.

Last year, the anticipated expenditure for tourists visiting this destination increased by 15.6%, making a dinner for two people featuring a three-course meal along with a bottle of wine cost an impressive £128.27.

A New York cup of coffee will also set tourists back £3.77 on average, and a bottle of beer £7.07 and a glass of wine, shockingly, is £11.08.
