Gold Fields Quenches Fiaseman SHS's Water Woes

Chieftain and Gold Fields representatives ceremonially cut a ribbon to open the project.

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has assisted Fiaseman Senior High School (FIASEC) in the Western Region by addressing the severe water scarcity issue that has plagued the institution for an extended period.

The organization has built a Small-Town Water Supply System (STWSS) with a capacity of 40,000 liters for the school at an expense of $17,000.

The project encompasses a borehole, submersible pump, filtration system, a concrete structure, poly tanks, and piping leading to both the boys' and girls' dormitories along with the school's kitchen.

Abdel Razak Yakubu, the Executive Secretary of the Foundation, stated, "A few years back, the principal of the school reached out to us for help in addressing the institution's water issues."

He stated, "We opted to prolong our assistance to FIASEC with the aim of ensuring easier access to water for the students and enhancing their comfort during their time on campus."

He emphasized that water is a precious resource crucial for future generations and urged the FIASEC administration to form a task force aimed at devising strategies to effectively raise funds for managing the facility.

We will keep working with the ECG to explore the possibility of switching the metering system from prepaid to post-paid, aiming to simplify the management for the school.

"We won’t burden you with numerous bills. Instead, we’ll make sure you have a minimum of three months’ worth of units supplied through your meter. This way, you'll have enough time over the next three months to figure out how to manage paying for them," he explained.

Mr. Yakubu urged businesses active in the region to contribute towards advancing progress at the school.

John Kofi Sagoe, who leads FIASEC, emphasized that having access to clean and consistent water isn't merely essential; it’s a basic human right vital for sustaining cleanliness, well-being, and educational success.

"We greatly value this contribution from the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation. This facility will guarantee a consistent water supply, which is essential for maintaining hygiene, preparing meals, and ensuring overall upkeep at our school," he stated.

The principal guaranteed that the premises would be well-maintained.

He likewise pointed out several issues presently facing the institution, including an outdated facility for male students, insufficient housing for employees, and the absence of a well-equipped contemporary science lab amongst other concerns.

Madam Linda Dedoo, Senior Extension Services Specialist at the Community Water and Sanitation Agency in the Western Region, commended the Foundation for significantly supporting institutions within its operational zones.
