Ethiopia Vows to Complete WTO Accession by March 2026
On April 26, 2026, (ENA reported) — During the margins of the 2025 IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings taking place in Washington D.C., an important gathering focused on the World Trade Organization (WTO) accession processes for both Ethiopia and Uzbekistan.
At the event, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance Eyob Tekalign discussed the achievements of the domestically initiated economic reforms in Ethiopia and their significance for the country's application to join the World Trade Organization.
Eyob restated Ethiopia's dedication to finalize its WTO membership process by MC14, scheduled for March 2026 in Yaoundé.
The forum was jointly organized by the WTO, World Bank Group, and the IMF. Present were Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who serves as the Director-General of the WTO; Ndiame Diop, VP for East and Southern Africa at the WB; and Ken Kang, Deputy Director of Strategy at the IMF.
The participants praised Ethiopia's dedication to adhering to an internationally regulated trade framework and vowed to offer complete assistance for Ethiopia's application process.
WTO Chief Iweala emphasizes the importance of securing appropriate technical and capacity assistance from international bodies and individual countries to advance the accession process.
